No, you will probably find that most citizens didn't. In fact, until 9-11, I'd bet that most of us continued to think that we were dealing with "just criminal elements of the world", instead of actual International terrorists.... Most of us had no idea the extent of the problems coming from the ME....and it certainly didn't help that so called news services like CNN decided to hold things back from what was going on in places like Iraq, either.
