That gives a mortality range of 1.14% to 2.28%.

There really are two different "mortality rates" here. One is the percentage of the population a disease kills; the more common definition is the percentage of those who get the disease that die. I've seen estimates that 1/3 of people got the 'flu, which would give a mortality rate of around 3-7% by the other more common definition.

Remember the mortality rates we are hearing about for SARS are likely too low - there are many people who have the disease but have not yet recovered. If you look at the ratio of dead:recovered in places with reliable statistics you get a pretty grim outlook:

Canada - 12:54 (22%)
Hong Kong - 94:436 (21%)
Singapore - 16:104 (15%)
