Nokia acquires enterprise software developer
By Robert Keenan -- CommsDesign.com -- April 22, 2003 (11:20 a.m. EST)

WAYNE, N.J. — Nokia is looking to strengthen its mobile data position in the enterprise sector by acquiring software developer Eizel Technologies in a stock-for-stock merger valued at $21 million.

Pittsburgh-based Eizel develops server-based software products that transform e-mail messages, attachments, intranet applications and web content into formats that can be accessed by users through a web browser on a mobile device. By running on a server, companies can implement this software without altering source content and without adding software to the client device.

The Eizel platform operates on Linux- and Unix-based server systems. It supports SSL and LDAP-based authentication.

Once the transaction is completed, Nokia will integrate the Eizel team into its enterprise network security division.

Nokia also said it would combine Eizel's software with its own security enterprise product portfolio. Additionally, Nokia will embed the software in its security appliances and handsets, such as the 6800. The transaction is subject to standard closing conditions.
