NEW HAVEN: YALE OFFICIALS ADDED TO LAWSUIT A former Yale University lecturer has added five university officials as defendants to a lawsuit against several Police Department officials who named him as a suspect in the 1998 killing of Suzanne Jovin, a Yale exchange student from Germany. In his amended suit, the former lecturer, James Van de Velde, 43, says Yale officials violated his civil rights. The lawsuit, originally filed in 2001 against the New Haven police chief, Melvin H. Wearing, and other police officials, has added as defendants Yale's president, Richard C. Levin; its vice president and secretary, Linda K. Lorimer; the dean of Yale College, Richard Broadhead; a university spokesman, Thomas Conroy; and the chief of the campus police, James Perrotti. The lawsuit says the Yale officials publicized information that the New Haven police considered Mr. Van de Velde a suspect. The Police Department has yet to make an arrest in the case, and a Yale spokeswoman said yesterday that university officials acted properly.
