My wish is for every immigrant to the US to be welcome here and for them in turn to be appreciative of the US. My parents were immigrants to this country from Ireland.

The reason that the H-1B visa program is seeing political opposition is because the Tech industry is laying off thousands of US workers. The original rational for the H-1B visa program was to fill the many open positions that American tech companies had in the late 90's.

In fact when filling a position with an H-1B candidate the company has to post a notice saying that no American candidate is available with the qualifications to fill the position. Which in today's job climate seems pretty unlikely.

Here is a link to a story about the job climate in Silicon Valley.

If you want to know how grim the scene is for the unemployed information technology worker, attend a tech job fair in the Silicon Valley. The U.S. tech industry has lost more than half a million jobs in two years, giving back most of the gains made during the dot-com mania, and turning events like the BrassRing affair into long shots for even the most optimistic and skilled of job hunters.
