The Americans are there and yet they are not there. Tanks are parked in places but the soldiers can't understand what the people are shouting. 'Go Home!' And they will go home, sooner rather than later and control of much of Iraq will vest with the Shia majority and Islamic law will prevail and what will America have gained? On balance what will America have lost? And will the torture chambers be filled again, with the new opponents of the new regime? America wil be expelled from Iraq and the limitations of military power will be there for all to see. One particular arrogance stands out already - the awarding of contracts for reconstruction to American companies - one wonders if the new sovereign Iraq will leave these contracts in place or whether they will be rescinded in favour of French and German competitors? What an irony!
