Scotty came up with the slogan(s) in an attempt to deflect Wall streets attention. Problem is it hasn't worked.
IMO, the Computer drove the need for networks. Once you had all those cheap PCs you wanted them networked.

Standard non proprietary software? Surely you jest. What standards body oversees Java or Solaris?
