I respect the proposition that we live in the context of a global community in which the US does not and should not be expected to have to shoulder the burden for having to do everything -- and in which the US is not so arrogant as to think that the world accepts the US as its leader and savior. The US needs the UN to engage this world community. The UN needs the US to be viable. When the US walks away from the UN, we are left without any viable forum in which to try to make the world into a workable community. The UN is indeed deeply flawed, but it is the best vehicle available to create a viable global community based on the rule of law and respect for human rights. The UN is not irrelevant. We do not gain by destroying it. Bush Sr. knew this and did a marvelous job of working through the UN, despite the problems and issues of doing so. Bush Jr. allowed a group of ideologues to poison any hope for working through the UN, and Powell was unable to turn the tide once the direction was set, despite considerable effort and despite expending considerable personal capital along the way. We live in a world beset by some very terrible problems. We need to find effective ways to work together. We will not bomb our way to peace and prosperity.
