Only 40 per cent of the people with what we call Sars have the corona virus. We have found no other virus but the connection between Sars and corona is actually very weak, he said.

If 40% have the virus and nobody who has not shown symptoms of SARS (i.e., healthy controls) has yet been shown to have the virus, then to my mind there's a more than "very weak" connection.

But it certainly is possible that something different has been going on in Toronto given the disparity in death rate there. It could be a significant mutation, or it could be a co-infection. But it's equally possible that their test is defective in some way or that the SARS virus can only be detected at certain periods of the disease in some people.
