This remains to be seen, and I don’t see much preparation for it. A lot of people seem to assume that a democratic Iraq will naturally do as we think they ought, which is not likely.

I don't understand what you are saying Steve. Why should we care what the heck Iraq does as long as they:
1. Remain a united country;
2. Don't train terrorists or develop WMDs;
3. Don't attack another country; and
4. Don't try to wipe out any Iraqi minorities.

If they had a credible government that could agree to those things tomorrow, I'd say ship the troops home whenever they asked us to. Islamic state or secular is irrelevant.

There's nothing in the definition of "democracy" that precludes its citizens from installing a religious regime, or a dictator for that matter.

The only difficulty I can see in the whole piece is getting them to install a credible government without killing each other.
