Turkish television reported last week that U.S. Ambassador Robert Pearson told some members of the Turkish Parliament that the United States would remain in Iraq for two decades or more after the war. The daily Sabah on Thursday quoted Pearson as saying: "Whether Saddam goes or stays, whether the U.N. gives the U.S. a decision or not, there will be a military action. ... There is no culture of democracy in this region. Our plans to reorganize the region cannot be accomplished in five years. It cannot be accomplished in 10 years.
