PB,
Re: To be honest RD, I don't think that would happen. If someone rigs the electronic voting machines, it will get whistle blown at some point imho.
I have a book selection to recommend to you. It is "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy" by Greg Palast. amazon.com
I saw Palast recently on his book tour. He has some harrowing things to tell us about electronic voting. For instance, the U.S. Supreme Court has recently ruled that the software that is used in the various electronic voting devices such a the iVotronic, is propriety, and therefore the public shall have no access to the software. Curiously, Sen. Chuck Hagel (R. Nebraska) owns a substantial interest in a company that manufactures electronic voting machines. You do the math.
Or here's another example Palast presented. In the flawed 2000 election in Florida, the media conveniently distracted the entire planet with endless chatter about chads. This was to distract everyone from the real scandals. They included fraudulent voter scrubs, among other very choice and artful dodges: gregpalast.com
And it also included something else. It seems that a certain brand of touch screen voting machine has an optional setting in its software. While these machine yielded no auditable voter tabulation, they also had a very troublesome feature that I'll describe presently. It seems that the county clerks had an option as to what to do with "spoiled" ballots. The machines could be set to reject a ballot that had been spoiled by the voter casting two votes for the same office (for instance, first voting for Buchanan then for Gore) and to spit the ballot back at the voter in the booth for correction. The machine also could be set so that if a ballot was spoiled by over-votes, the machine accepted the result and voided the vote without the voter being the wiser. Guess which counties set the machine to allow the voter to correct their ballot mistake? Now guess which counties set machines to disallow corrections to the ballots? Genius points for you if you figured out that predominantly white, GOP counties let the voters try again, and predominantly black, Democratic counties were set up to shred improperly cast ballots. All without an auditable trail. Neat, huh?
This stuff is better than those ol, nasty poll taxes for keepin' the nigra down!
