I got through about 1/3 of Robert Baer's book before realizing that he was still working for the spooks at the CIA, spreading disinformation and distraction.

The Agency is very arrogant. They know that very few people will read that line an comprehend just how sinister its implications are.
The journalist referred to is Seymour Hersh, and the RWEs in the CIA have been trying to discredit him since the days of the Viet Nam War when Hersh first started exposing the rotten underbelly of the military and the intel communities.
Hersh writes the "Fact" column in the New Yorker, among other things.

The thin skinned Perle has counterattacked in British courts for the article in a U.S. publication. A curious move:

In December, 2001, Hersh exposed a most remarkable episode, when the CIA apparently forced the USAF to stand down and let several thousand al Qaeda fighters escape from Afghanistan to Pakistan, where they later resurfaced in the Kashmir aiding the arms dealers from Raytheon, Lockheed and Boeing:
