Everyone will be exposed to this disease over the next year, and the economic impact should be heavy. On the "History of SARS" page note the column "% resolved deaths outside China", which is about 15%. Notice also the page "Deaths by Age", which shows that people under 35 have a resolved death rate of less than 2%, while the rate for those over 65 exceeds 63%.

This disease may disproportionately affect political and financial systems IMO, as the leadership tends to be older.

The stock markets may drop into a deep abyss, as the lion's share of financial assets are held by people aged 50 and older. The problem of insolvency in Social Security and Medicare will be ameliorated. The real estate prices in Florida and Arizona will sink. Life insurers may take a serious hit, but group medical insurers and companies with underfunded pension liabilities will benefit.

It's not clear to me how gold will be impacted. However, there should be reduced demand for commodities, especially energy.
