I agree. Really the problem is twofold. The first problem is that outside of the Kurds, there is no other viable alternatives to the Shia groups. I don't see an easy solution. BUT, if somehow it was possible for US to remain in Iraq for the next 5 years and see to it that decent political and civil infrastructure is built, then perhaps things could return to normal. The next alternative is to establish the basic frame work and the ground rules (such as protection of minorities) and then "leave" the Iraqis alone to work it out over the next 5 years. Iraq should be in state of near complete blockade during this time so that no one can interfere and only the most competent groups will end up in power at the end of the 5 years. But I really do not see easy solutions here.
