I think the only way to avoid the less desirable outcomes in Jacob's list is to inject large amounts of US dollars now before the clerics establish themselves even more firmly. The window of opportunity is closing rapidly and if we wait for surplus Iraqi oil revenues, it will be too late. Very hard to mobilize people with nice jobs paying $100 US dollars a month. A million Baghdatis with such jobs is all it will take to preempt the clerics in Baghdad. Maybe 5 million for the whole country. That's half a billion a month, one quarter of the military occupation budget. In a year or two there will be enough oil revenues and the economy will have recovered enough to phase it out.

Will we do it, or will Republican hangups about government handouts and the free market interfere?
