Savory oatmeal. I fix it with soy milk and add chopped, sauteed onions and cheese. I've tried it with cheddar and pepper jack only because I had them in the house and they're both good. I'm looking for one more ingredient but haven't found it yet. I enjoy it the way it is but I know I'm just one ingredient away from something special. If the notion of an oatmeal that isn't sweet hasn't gagged you into silence, I'd appreciate recommendations. I've tried various herbs so far and think I'll try a few sprinkles of bacon next.

Regarding falling back on carbs, this experience has me believing that carbs are a physical addiction. Once I gave them up, I quit having cravings and eating past satiety, both of which were like being possessed by demons. The demons are quite gone now. I don't know if this would work for anyone else or even work for me at some other point in my life but it worked this year and I'm thankful for it. It takes some attitudinal flexibility to get your head around the notion that breakfast means salmon rather than pancakes, and a bitch to eat out, but it seems to have worked.

As for it being difficult at first, what I did was just eat protein, as much as I wanted, until I was satisfied. I would buy a rotisserie chicken or a slab of salmon and just bury my face in it until I'd had enough, then do the same thing the next day. After a couple of days, I added a salad and, later, other things. My earliest recollection was of not being hungry. And shortly after recognized that my mind wasn't running to pasta or potatoes. It was less than a week before the carbs were on the back burner of my appetite. For the first few months, I kept frozen mashed potatoes in the house for emergencies and I did have some emergencies, but they passed quickly. Now I have no particular interest in starches. So, no, it wasn't difficult for me. In fairness, though, I never had much of a sweet tooth. I would typically eat cake and scrape off the icing. It was mostly starches that I craved. So maybe I'm not a hard case.
