I don't think shorts are gambling. It is calculated speculation based on many factors. To me, Dell is a good company, exceptional up to this time. But its future is not so sure given the competitions. As a matter of fact, according to your theory, then the guys who buy dell at this time are also gambling, hoping the expectation for earnings would carry the stock higher to screeze a bit more. As for investment, I would invest in Compaq instead of Dell at this point if I have to buy box makers.
