Intutition is the major way I make progress. Then I try to work out a logical mathematical etc. explanation. But I can only do the intuitive leap given the experience, knowledge training I do have. My research is largely based on applying methods from other fields to different problems. I am very interdisciplinary (supposed geographer in an economics department).

The climate science community don't like what we are doing (applying econometric models to modeling the global climate system) and though they have to publish our stuff as it is solid they so far largely ignore it in terms of citations etc. Or try to publish comments criticizing it. I'm an amateur in that field as I lasted studied physics formally at age 16 and don't get any funding or anything. When my boss a few years back told me "I doubt you can make any contribution in that field" I got really excited about making a contribution in just that field.

But we are using scientific method. That's why we get published and the wacky pseudo-science people don't.
