The US expects a government "hostile" to the US

That is news to me.

My understanding is that they would much prefer an ex-pat sympathetic to the US (a la Afghane) to lead Iraq. Like Chalabi, who is, as we speak, touted around Iraq and protected by the US.

Are you really saying that US will now stand by for democratic elections, and will be OK with a nationalist/Islamist/whatever government that is NOT sympathetic to the US and will have nothing to do with Halliburton et al? Give all the oil contracts to Russia/France & tell US/UK to take their oil expectations and shove'em where the sun don't shine?

I don't think so.

You don't invade if you want to be loved!

I would agree with you, if I had been spared the bizarre arguments of "We are liberating the Iraqis! So they will love us!" et cetera on the SI over the past couple of months.
