Don't understand what a white sheet pulled over you is supposed to accomplish, other than avert your eyes from your imminent death.

A white sheet is adequate protection against alpha radiation.

When a nuclear explosion is imminent or occurs...you cover yourself with a white sheet or garment (paper will do) to protect against alpha radiation and use a building to shield yourself from blast and other types of radiation.

Keep the sheet on until the shockwave passes over you twice. Once going and once coming.

In my book I wrote that you limit your risk by limiting your exposure. Avoiding fallout zones completely is best, but if you are caught in one, you need a basic understanding of how they develop so you can select the best escape route. I invented the "One Minute Fallout Zone Calculator", a simple and quickly learned tool to teach the average untrained person how to do just that. A fallout zone calculator is included with each copy of the book.

Don't forget this is not just a nuclear threat. Chemical and biological weapons can also create fallout zones. The tool works for all fallout zones.

More info on radiation and protection can be found on the EPA website.
