More proposals target stock falls

The ruling coalition reached a basic agreement Wednesday over more proposals aimed at halting the stock market decline, according to coalition lawmakers.

These include creation of a private-sector body to purchase shares, they said.

The agreement was reached by a financial policy panel comprising representatives from the Liberal Democratic Party, New Komeito and the New Conservative Party.

The coalition had previously issued a set of proposals aimed at boosting stock prices, such as suspending the mark-to-market accounting method under which shareholdings are valued in companies' financial reports at their market prices.

Other new proposals include asking the central bank to raise the ceiling on its program to purchase bank-held shares to 4 trillion yen from the current 3 trillion yen, and to start buying bank shares.

On March 25, the central bank raised its purchases of stocks held by banks to 3 trillion yen from the initial 2 trillion yen.
