The classic editorial view is "if it bleeds it leads" but human carnage is relative now. Mass deaths in regions where people expect it like Africa, just aren't "news" now.

The whole Iraqi chapter is a blight on US media history as far as I am concerned. They sold their souls for some slick embedded footage. I'm not sure they will ever really recover.

Check the US network news tonight and see if that malaria story gets even 30 seconds on any of the main channels. Betcha it won't.
