The American/British mindset just doesn't seem to have much space for other
languages.

I don't know about British, but our high school requires two years of foreign language for graduation, and all the colleges and universities my kids applied to required a minimum of two years of a foreign language for admission. I think we're pretty typical in that. That doesn't sound to me much like disrespect for other languages.
