These were viewed as luxuries when the colonies and then the US was young enough to be fighting for survival. (Roughly, the first 200 years after the Pilgrims landed.) Only the elite had leisure to dwell on these, and the elite as represented by the upper classes left behind in Europe had a bad reputation. Political and economic issues of the present were much more important than the glories of the past which were enjoyed by and benefited only a few.

These attitudes left their mark. Generally speaking, Americans do focus on the present and the future and prefer the ephemeral "popular" culture. We are never going to understand peoples who hold grudges going back hundreds of years, and only a few Americans will truly appreciate the grandeur that was Greece and the glory that was Rome. Europeans may call this situation "sad", but most Americans won't.
