You touch on a great deal of truth -- although some might say much of what you say can/should be debated, but I tend to agree with you in principal/on balance. I can tell that you actually remember the period -- first hand.

The LIV that Reagan so badly wanted -- was offered to BUSH Sr -- who made no credible use of it. "Be careful what you pray for -- you just might get it." Clinton -- more or less the same. The LIV is a hollow tool -- because it strips Congress of the very thing that they can be best at -- providing specific solutions (i.e. money) for their given locales -- this is especially true for House Reps vs Senators -- and it handcuffs both sides of the aisle. So it becomes far more symbolic then effective -- and provides only a little extra autonomy for the given administration.

Reagan spent away like crazy -- his DEFENSE budget (as a %of GDP) passed Kennedy (which was historically high) -- and the later-term bank bailout cost hundreds of billions. Brought on by knee-jerk and unmeasured stripping/deregulation of the banking/FDIC etc... by the banking lobby.

Otherwise, I agree with the party-based comments you made.

Although the center is VERY crowded -- and the only way a candidate can truly distinguish him/herself is provide an alternative to this "everybody meet in the center approach" of today's politics.

If Gore was MORE Progressive (or further left) he would have won over some of the "green" party folk that got 2 to 8+% of many state's votes. He did not lose to the GOP -- he lost to his own kind.
