He was Minister of Finance from 1993 until last year, and (methods aside) the federal govt. deficit was eliminated on his watch.
D**N! Can we borrow this guy when you're done? We've got just the budget for him! :-)

That said, people who have tried to dig can't figure out what, if anything, he really stands for.
Hmmm.. Well. This is not too difficult. He really stands for himself being Prime Minister of Canada.
If you need any more like that, let us know. We've got lots of them. Just specify which political stripe you prefer.

Martin actually had a career in business, and until a couple of weeks ago owned a significant shipping company (he's thought to be worth a few hundred mil.).
Could be good or bad. Good if it resulted in an increase in understanding and vision. Bad if he wishes to use the gov't to set up his buddies and assure his future success once he leaves office. Our current administration appears to be (mal)adroit at this.
