I'm enjoying the interchange between you and find it very educational, particularly since I'm somewhat tech-challenged, so any comments I might make, such as the following, should be seen in that light.

That said I do want to express the notion that "messes" get cleaned up because the overall stakes are too large. Examples abound - there were interim competing modem codes because the 33.6 standard was argued for so long but it did arrive eventually, and the current 56K modem competition is another example. Folks seem to have learned from the 33.6 mess because the standard should be in place pretty soon, so I would guess that the same process will enable final standards being set in order to help make GE viable. As I said, the stakes are too high for compromise to end up being too elusive.
