Ummm....
I don't remember Bush beating the war drums before 9/11/2001. Do you?
Things have changed. Sorry about that.
At this point, I wouldn't try to predict the outcome of the '04 election. You might as well flip a coin. If the economy is lousy and there is no serious foreign threat, Bush likely loses. If there is a serious threat, he probably wins. People consider being alive more important than getting a Cadillac.
HEALTHCARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, EDUCATION, and the general state of our ECONOMY. Those 4 are not inextricably linked. ANy such assumption is foolhardy. HEALTHCARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, EDUCATION were nothing compared to now during FDR's term. The economy was good after '41, though- -because of a foreign war.
Johnson tried to inextricably link HEALTHCARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, EDUCATION and the general state of our ECONOMY. Didn't work very well at all. Out after one full term.
Fact is -- the vast majority of people, and somewhat selfishly/unfortunately (and most especially Americans) -- vote with their pocketbooks. Yeah- -when they don't see serious foreign threats. When they do, it's shoot the bastages and we'll settle the account books later.
The days of deficit spending are no longer acceptable. Again, that depends on circumstances. |
