Think about the implications....

If you don't know anyone else's history but your own, you are living on a planet with more than 100 strangers (other countries).

If you don't speak anyone else's language, you won't know anything except what you hear in English. You can't understand the thoughts and ideas of billions of other people.

If you don't give any thought to comparative philosophy or religion, you will cling to your own and become xenophobic about those who are different. Over time, "different" becomes "wrong" or "threatening". Look at the fools who believe in the myth of a "clash of civilizations".

If you don't understand comparative economics, you will struggle to compete in a multipolar economic world. China is an emerging economic superpower with very different development patterns from our own, for example.

If you focus only on your own here and now, eventually you are lost. You start to think the whole world is represented by your own cartoons and little else.

It's dangerous. It's ignorant. And Americans should realize that before they fall so far behind that history dumps them on the has-been list next. I doubt that Britain's rulers in 1890 ever imagined they would be a second-rate power 60 years later.
