I very much like reading Richard Lattimore's translation of the gospels from the Greek. The language is modern, and the writing style very smooth. Also, it's not broken down into numbered paragraphs. He wasn't a Bible scholar, he just translated it as if it were any other text. He was well known for translating Homer and Greek plays.

We got the entire Lattimore New Testament in two books as it was originally published - Acts and Letters were in a second volume - it's all collected now into one book. They aren't nearly as interesting as the gospels.
