Mirrors become objects of hatred for women long before 50 years. As a teenager I worked hours creating an image out of my passionate imagination that I carefully constructed and drew and painted over the me in the mirror. With each brushstroke, I covered all the things I didn't want to be. The mind is an amazing and powerful thing, but I learned quickly that the most meticulous and perfect creation can be shattered if one glances too abruptly into an unprepared and honest reflection. Now I wait for pastel lighting, a good night's sleep, a facial and makeover before I allow myself to look too long or too hard. I dream that perhaps fifty will bring the ability to drop the guards and the fear and allow me to accept the person who looks back as someone beautiful in her own right, with no magic lighting or paint.
