He painted a portrait of a biological warfare program that was riddled with bitter personality rivalries, sycophancy and corruption. He said he was originally dismissed in 1989 because he had personally complained to Mr. Hussein about fraud in the awarding of contracts in the program. He said Mr. Hussein appeared to agree with him, but did nothing because his son-in-law, Hussein Kamel, was in charge of the program.

I've often wondered if this is the only thing that has saved the human race in modern times. Look at Hitler - he drove away the near totality of the best minds Germany had... I loon like Trofim Lysenko had the ear of Stalin, and gravely damaged the USSR's agriculture with his screwball notions, very likely contributing to the eventual fall of the Soviet regime later on. North Korea hardly needs comment. Nearly every one of these kinds of regimes is so rotten at the core, so corrupt that the likelihood of real enough scientific talent flourishing in order to do damage to the rest of the world is almost zero.

Cold comfort, but still.
