Christopher, I have some of these same thoughts, believe it or not. Some friends and I were talking - and we wondered
if only WWII could be thought of as a legitimate use of
force by the US in the last century..

How would we, and the world, be different, if we had not
intervened in Vietnam, Korea, the Gulf, etc. (Or helped
overthrow such countries as Iran and Chile..)

Now, the Cold War was different too, and we had a threat
to our existence there also..

I also agree that when attacked, we should be ruthless. Many pure liberals would likely find my views here surprising. IMO, we did not apply enough force to deal with
Al-Qaeda, partly because we were afraid of our own troop losses on the ground, or of offending Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, our two authoritarian buddies now.
