Konarka Technologies

[mentioned in article "The next big things" on page C1 of today's Boston Globe]

konarkatech.com

One of the late Dr. Sukant K. Tripathy's favorite places, Konarka is the name of a temple in Orissa, India, dedicated to the Hindu god of the sun, Surya.

Mission: "to become the world leader in low-cost, flexible photovoltaics."

Technology:

Our Technology roadmap is based on the dye-sensitized solar cell, a technology made possible through low temperature sintering of TiO2. Konarka Technologies, Inc. has acquired the exclusive worldwide licensing rights to this technology from the University of Massachusetts. We continue to enhance the technology at all levels, including cell and module chemistry, manufacturing and product design.

Funding:

August 2001 - seed funding from Zero Stage Capital

October 2002 - $13.5 million in Series B funding led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson and including Zero Stage Capital, Ardesta, and NextGen Partners. Corporate investors ChevronTexaco and Eastman Chemical Company completed the round.

Looks a bit top-heavy with management; quite a few VPs, Directors, Advisors etc. for a development-stage company.
