llmarinen,
"If things are that simple, why doesn't USA ship them [el-Qaeda prisoners from Afghanistan] over to USA???"
What happened on 911 was a completely unique crime in the history of the United States. Terrorists supported by a rogue regime, the Taleban, without any sovereignty of their own; plotted, abetted or committed murder against 3,000 innocent Americans.
The process of sorting through the prisoners and determing their exact roles in that crime is slow, time consuming and even at this late date an on-going process. The US, or any nation, has the absolute right and obligation to protect it's citizens against these kinds of attacks.
It is clear that the US has decided to work very deliberately and carefully in this matter, and it is not in the interest of security to bring these prisoners to the United States where they would be entitled to the same legal protection guaranteed to it's citizens. At least not at this time.
I understand completely the controversial nature of the US decision, but given the bizarre and unique circumstances of this crime I believe security considerations supersede the rights of the men who committed this crime as well as the rights of those that condoned or abetted them.
In time, eventually, there will be a judicial process. |
