Did you read Friedman's column I posted to you? The fact is, Liz, that even most Democratic foreign policy experts (who generally remain critical of Bush, BTW - big surprise) agree that something needed to be done about Saddam Hussein - that it was right to remove him from power for a lot of reasons. Among those reasons are his support for terrorism (no one with a clue denies that, BTW - they only dispute whether Saddam DIRECTLY colluded with bin Laden) and his brutal, murderous oppression of the Iraqi people. Unfortunately, neither the American people nor the UN Security Council cared enough about the Iraqi people or the openly declared links to terrorists (they were "only" killing Israelis, after all) to support military action to get rid of Saddam. With Americans, it was probably a combination of our natural tendency toward isolationism (which has gotten us into much bigger trouble in the past by preventing early action) and the eagerness of some opponents of Bush to oppose even the most sensible policies out of pure partisanship. Anyway, WMDs were not the only valid reason for taking action against Saddam. If Bush erred, it was by focusing too much on WMDs in order to gain the support of those who couldn't care less about Iraqis as long as their own lives (or livelihoods, as seemed to be your biggest concern) weren't on the line.
