NTT's New Three-Year Business Plan Promotes Introduction of Fiber Optic Services April 28, 2003 (TOKYO) -- NTT Corp, the main holding company for the whole group of NTT firms, unveiled the group's new 2003-2005 business plan on April 23.
The plan promotes the "Optical New-Generation Vision," which was first announced back in November 2002, with fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services set to become central to the group's efforts to develop new sources of income.
The plan also envisages the group's consolidated operating profits rising from 2002's (anticipated) 1.3 trillion yen to 1.6 trillion yen in 2005, thanks to efforts to reduce depreciation costs related to its loss-making fixed line services.
As examples of the kinds of actual services it will start offering during the period covered by the business plan, NTT says it will build up the New-Generation Vision by introducing its "RENA Network" to allow transfer of video data to and fro between videophones, enable easy distribution of content, and develop sensor-based services using devices like wireless IC tags. Services such as these could be available as early as the spring of 2005. In order to speed up development of new services, NTT is setting up a system that will allow development projects to be carried out across all of the group's firms.
In particular, it aims to soon start offering a special package deal -- comprising a range of IP services that are currently available from different firms in the NTT group -- targeted at small- and medium-sized companies. As has already been reported, NTT President Norio Wada has said that the group needs time to decide whether or not to set up a separate firm to handle its IP services business, but for the time being the group firms are doing the work internally. Therefore, no mention is made in the new three-year plan of establishing a separate IP business firm.
