Donny George, director-general of research at Iraq's Board of Antiquities and Heritage ... said he would not be surprised to discover that the same people were behind the decade-old black-market trade and the recent thefts from the National Museum.

To him, there is no question the recent thefts were targeted, professional jobs that perhaps had help from members of the museum staff.

The robbers focused on some of the most valuable objects in the museum, objects that would have stood out only to the trained eye. They arrived equipped with glass-cutters -- an odd tool for looters to have handy -- that were used to break into various display cases.

Some of the more minor objects stolen are trickling back to the museum, having been taken to mosques by unknown parties. Dr. George, however, fears that some of the more rare objects that are lost could go the way of those apparently sold through the Drouot auction house.
