NC,
I have view the shiite demonstations, fueled by iran, as an attempt to split up iraq into three component states. Shiites in south become puppet of iran and a conduit into syria. The baghdad area perhaps gets some sort of weak democratic regime or an autocrat. Kurds split and you end up with a war involving turkey. This type of mess works well for the iranian clerics by destabilizing the entire region. I think the iranian wish will be defeated by the desire of most iraqis to preserve the state and that includes the silent majority of shiites. The pent up religious fervor doesn not mean the an iranian type state, not just yet anyway. Mike
