Death rate of SARS mostly depends on the age of the patients.

"Statistics in Hong Kong show that the death rate among people younger than 55 is 3.6 percent. For patients between 65 and 75, it is 18.9 percent. For those older than 75, the death rate is 28.6 percent."

Up to now, there are no children <15 get SARS in Beijing, and very few are >65. Some people think the reason for this is that few older people go out of their home recently. Although it is still a mystery why young children do not get it.

And the death rate of SARS in Guangdong is < 3.8% as of now.
