I've been following Saddam Huessein since the mid 1980s. I knew he had intentions on invading Kuwait as he had been complaining that it was really a part of Iraq and they were stealing Iraq's oil. I know he ran a brutal regime. It was in the international press from time to time. I remember when he gassed the Kurds in 1988 and the U.S. and British stood by and did nothing. I know he built tremendous palaces while his people suffered.

According to the article that you posted, he used to use his enoromous oil wealth to help the common people in Iraq during 1970s. That's great! But, somewhere along the way he lost his course and started to brutalize his people and neglect their needs. His biggest mistake was invading Kuwait, which left him with almost no oil revenue and a ruined country. That is what makes him a fool in my eyes. He should have continued with the program that he started in the 1970s of bettering his country for the people and sharing the oil wealth. The Western oil powers would have left him alone if he had just behaved. But, he ran afoul of the Western oil powers with his invasion of Kuwait. And it was all downhill from there for Saddam. He miscalculated in a major way and has paid the ultimate price with loss of control of his country and possibly the loss of his life.
