It sounded like you were nostalgic about the model for male strength in the middle of the last century--breadwinner, head of household, authoritarian. Seemed to me that many became neurotic trying to play that role. Either that or petty tyrant. I prefer the model of partner, friend, nurturer, decent fellow. Seems to me it is a sign of strength to be good at the latter in light of the vulnerability. The former was often more bluff than substance. And damned lonely, to boot.
