Hamas, Islamic Jihad reject disarmament

Al-Khalil, April 29, IRNA -- Hamas and the Islamic Jihad organizations
have rejected a call by the Palestinian Authority Prime Minister
Mahmoud Abbas for disarming resistance groups in fulfillment of
Israeli and American demands to that effect.

Hamas spokesman in Gaza Abdul Aziz al Rantisi described the PA
premier's call as ''strange and unrealistic.''

''How can we drop our arms when the Occupation army is rampaging
through our streets and killing our civilians on a daily basis. Don't
we have the right to defend ourselves?''

Rantisi, who was speaking on the Jazeera satellite Television
Tuesday, said PA efforts to disarm the resistance were meant first and
foremost to appease the Zionists and their American allies.

He said Hamas and other Palestinian resistance groups would never
drop their arms so long as the Israeli occupation continued to
terrorize and torment the Palestinian people.

Similar statements were made by Muhammed Hindi, a spokesperson of
the Islamic Jihad organization.

Earlier, Abbas said his government would seek to collect what he
called the ''illegal firearms'' from Palestinian resistance groups.

He argued that only Palestinian police forces would be allowed to
carry firearms.
