you could make sure your friend doesn't have ccApp.exe disabled at start up. if it isn't running, email scanning and auto-protect won't work. a firewall may be blocking it from starting, or your friend may have disabled it in an effort to save resources. or some malware may have it shut down. check under running processes and see if ccApp.exe is there and configured to start. you didn't tell us your friend's operating system, but you know how to check for this, i assume.

in addition, another essential nav process to look for is ccRegVfy.exe. if it isn't running along with ccApp.exe, auto-protect will not run and there'll be a red X over the nav icon in the systray.
