Why should we not be willing to sacrifice lives in peace time for our liberty, when we are so ready in war?

There is so much more to gain when striving for liberty. Through war it becomes a question of who loses the most, there is nothing to be gained. For example, even if the U.S. sucessfully seizes the oil fields of Iraq, what was really gained? There was never any doubt that the oil would be sold by someone anyway and find it's way into your gas tank.
