"One has to show that there has been exacerbation of the tension, and that efforts to ameliorate matters have been unsuccessful, in the long run."

Let's use the Boxing Ring thread for an example. It makes sense that in a boxing ring you want to provoke other participants into a discussion that stresses tension between two sides of an issue. If the tension remains static, the discussion becomes stagnated. If the tension is resolved so is the discussion. So, to have a lively discussion thread it seems we not only want to provoke participants but increase the stress as we go toward some imaginary breaking point. The dynamic might be destroyed if some blow hard shows up and begins flaming participants and making personal attacks. If the discussion was no where near a breaking point then the discussion disolves into personal banter that disintegrates the original topic without resolution.

If you buy the above, then it seems profitable not only to provoke adversary but to tease it toward the imaginary test point. The art of lively discussion then would be in keeping participants engaged, getting closer and closer to the imaginary point while keeping it unbroken. The matters to be ameliorated would be the personal ones or the distracting side issues. If that can't be done one poses a challenge to the detractor. No?
