I believe the problem arises when countries that choose not to fall in line with military adventures of the United States find themselves threatened or actually penalized economically by the US. For example, France and Germany will be without a military ally of significance because they didn't tow the line and will be penalized accordingly through economics. Their only course of action is to ally with others and create their own collective military strength that is not overshadowed or dictated to by the US and this means a military alliance that excludes the US but is large and significant enough to command respect and collective economic strength that the US would choose not to entirely alienate.

All this would suggest a forthcoming collapse of NATO which I believe will occur. All countries that wish to be independant of dictatorial US military adventurism will have to create alternative alliances and power bases. I can imagine that some interesting alliances may form. (eg: Turkey, Russia, Germany, France, Canada, China and God only knows who else)
One thing is for sure, countries are not going to continue being diss'd by the US and not re-act. They will gravitate towards each other for military independance and economic strength I believe.

Don't interpret my vision as implying a confrontational re-organization but one of balance that may allow dignity to all countries and ultimately a decent working arrangement.
