I agree, but your definition of democracy, is not the issue here, and neither is mine. Neither is anybody's, really: the war was fought to obtain specific political objectives, and democracy was only one of them. An Islamic state would not be in accordance with those objectives.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the goal of developing a democratic Iraq conflicts with other policy goals.


The only difficulty I can see in the whole piece is getting them to install a credible government without killing each other.

Or killing us, I assume. The difficulty is that our administration has specific views on what constitutes an acceptable government for Iraq, and the ideas of a lot of Iraqis, particularly those of the most politically organized Iraqis, don’t add up with those views.

It’s a fairly significant difficulty.
