Time changes a lot of things. Forty years is a long time. Whereas an invasion by strangers from all over the world would at the time be met with hostility from the local population (surprise, surprise), I do not agree with you that is the general understanding of this day and age. I believe Palestinians' expectations have been curbed to what is realistic - that is, having a state of their own separate from Israel. Now, "occupation" is that of the land which is not Israel - i.e. "occupied territories". In all, you are trying to say more or less in the lines of "We can't do anything to please them anyway, since all they want is total destruction of Israel, so we don't have to compromise at all, since peace is impossible with these savages, and hence we will continue with our brutal occupation of Palestinians and the land on which they live". Basically, I don't see a solid rational ground for any of those statements.
